Louis Kahn (1901-1974)

  • Alfred Newton Richards Medical Research Laboratories, University of Pennsylvania, Philadelphia, PA, 1960
Kahn connected to the Furness path through his former colleague George Howe. Born in Estonia, he grew up in industrial Philadelphia in which nearly every block offered a brick factory or a mill whose forms described their functions. Educated at the University of Pennsylvania, Kahn returned to teach in G. Holmes Perkins’ Graduate School of Fine Arts. His teaching studio occupied the former auditorium at the head of the great stair in Furness’ University of Pennsylvania Library which must have provided a foil to minimal modernism as Kahn began to design the Richards Medical Research Laboratory. © George E.
